Best Butter Biscuits

Butter Biscuit/Shortcake Dough

Sweet or savoury, this is your no-fail ticket to biscuit dreams.  Add and extra tablespoon of sugar for a sweeter application to open up and fill with jams, fruit puree or strawberries & whipped cream.  Fold in cheese or herbs for a more savoury application as a side to a soup, or open up for the ultimate breakfast sandwich. 

2 cups flour

2 tbsp. sugar plus more for dusting

½ tsp. salt

½ tsp. baking soda

4 tsp. baking powder

½ cup unsalted butter, chilled

1-cup buttermilk

  • Pre-Heat Oven to 400°F

  • Use a fork to whisk together all dry ingredients in a bowl

  • Grate the butter into the flour mixture; toss lightly to coat

  • Mix in buttermilk using fork

  • Knead 6-8 times to bring dough together

  • Chill 15 minutes or overnight

  • Cut into 4-8 pieces

  • Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 15-17 minutes
